Detailed Biography of Tony La Russa
Tony La Russa has enjoyed an impressive and successful career as a manager in Major League Baseball. Since beginning his managerial career in 1979, La Russa has led his teams to six league championships and three World Series Titles. He currently ranks third in MLB history in career victories and is only the second manager or coach in American sports history to have managed 5,000 games.
La Russa got his start in MLB as a player, after being signed by the Kansas City Athletics during the 1962 season. After spending some time as in the minor leagues, La Russa finally made his major league debut on May 10, 1963. For the next 10 years, La Russa would spend time as a middle infielder, playing for the Athletics, Atlanta Braves, and Chicago Cubs, before retiring to pursue a career in law.
After graduating from law school in 1978, La Russa decided that he would much rather spend his life working in baseball than practicing law. He received his first managerial opportunity from the Chicago White Sox, when the team named him the manager of their Double-A affiliate, the Knoxville Sox. Since then, La Russa hasn’t looked back. He has gone on to become the manager of the Chicago White Sox and then the Oakland Athletics, who he led to the World Series Title in 1989. In 1996, he was named the skipper of the St. Louis Cardinals, where he managed the team to the World Series Championship in 2006, and again in 2011. While as a manager, La Russa was named AL Manager of the Year three times, and NL Manager of the year once, making him one of only four managers in MLB history to be named Manager of the Year in both leagues.
