Tommy John

Tommy John was such a famous, talented and well respected pitcher that when he needed a revolutionary surgery to repair a damaged ligament in his left pitching arm that the successful surgery was ultimately named after him, and today, you will still hear of pitchers receiving the Tommy John surgery.

Born in Terre Haute, Indiana, early Tommy John appearances were more likely to take place on the basketball court than the baseball diamond. While he initially wanted to focus on basketball as a career, he eventually realized that he was better suited for pitching baseball. So after he was drafted by the Cleveland Indians in 1963, the first Tommy John appearance in Major League Baseball took place on September 6, 1963. Throughout his long Major League Baseball career, there were also Tommy John appearances for the Chicago White Sox, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the New York Yankees, the California Angels and the Oakland Athletics before he officially retired from Major League Baseball on May 25, 1989, while playing for the New York Yankees.

A memorable Tommy John endorsement was issued for what is now called the Tommy John surgery when a revolutionary surgery repaired his damaged ulnar collateral ligament in 1974. Some were concerned if you would ever see a Tommy John appearance on the mound again, but he returned to play baseball professionally for another 15 years.
