Shawn Johnson

Shawn Johnson was a fresh, new face on the gymnastics scene during the 2008 Olympics.  She proved to be a competitor in Beijing when she placed second all-around and brought home the gold medal in the balance beam finals.  She also helped lead the United States Olympic Team to an all-around silver medal.

During her junior career Johnson attracted widespread attention at the 2004 Junior Olympics National Championship and the 2005 U.S. Classic, where she placed third overall.  In 2007 Johnson continued to excel and show off her new skills at the 2007 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.  Here she performed in all four gymnastics events, the only U.S. athletes to do so, and helped lead the United States to their second gold medal at the World Championships.  In 2007 Johnson also competed in the Pan American Games, where she brought home gold medals in the uneven bars and balance beam, as well as all-around.  She also placed second for the floor and the United States went on to win the gold medal overall. 

In 2008 Johnson competed in her first Olympic Games in Beijing.  Here she competed in all four events during the team competition, in which the United States won the silver medal.  In the individual competition she won silver all-around and her teammate Nastia Luikin won the gold medal.  This was the first time that the United States Women’s Gymnastics team took home both the gold and silver medals in the individual all-around competition.  Johnson also won the gold in the balance beam competition and a silver medal in the floor exercise.
