Detailed Biography of Capt Jim Lovell
Captain Jim Lovell may never have actually made it out to step foot on the surface of the moon, but he does hold several space records that can never be taken away from him. For example, Captain Jim Lovell was the first of just three people to fly to the moon twice and the only one of those three people never to have gotten to walk on the moon. Captain Jim Lovell also became the first person in history to have made four trips into space.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Jim Lovell was captivated by the potential for space travel at a young age and spent a great deal of time making rockets. Jim Lovell appearances for the United States Navy began in the 1950s when he graduated from the United States Naval Academy and entered the Navy as a pilot. He subsequently became a Naval test pilot. In 1958, Jim Lovell appearances took place in a group of 110 pilots considered to be potential astronauts. Jim Lovell appearances for NASA began in 1962 as part of Astronaut Group 2. The first Jim Lovell appearance in space took place aboard Gemini 9A and then subsequently again as the first commander of Gemini 12 in 1966, which gave him more experience in space than any other NASA astronauts.
Captain Jim Lovell appearances on lunar flights took place on both Apollo 8 and Apollo 13, but unfortunately, both shuttle flights were plagued by problems, and he was unable to land on the surface of the moon. In the movie “Apollo 13,” Jim Lovell appearances were portrayed by Academy Award winner Tom Hanks.
