Detailed Biography of Avery Johnson
Since spending more than 15 years in the National Basketball Association as a top point guard playing for teams across the country, Avery Johnson has found a successful second career as a popular NBA coach.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, early Avery Johnson appearances with his high school basketball team helped prove how talented he was as he led St. Augustine High School all the way to a state championship and an undefeated season. In college, Avery Johnson appearances came at the New Mexico Junior College, Cameron University and then Southern University. While still in college, Avery Johnson appearances resulted in twice being the assists leader in the NCAA. Although he was not drafted at the end of his college experience, Avery Johnson signed up to play Palm Beach Stingrays in the United States Basketball League. He performed so well as a point guard with the Palm Beach Stingrays that he was soon signed by the Seattle Super Sonics. For the next 16 years, Avery Johnson appearances as point guard came for a number of teams, including the Denver Nuggets, the Houston Rockets, the San Antonio Spurs, the Golden State Warriors and the Dallas Mavericks. While with the San Antonio Spurs, Avery Johnson appearances helped the team win the 1999 NBA Championship. He also won the NBA Sportsmanship Award.
Following his career, Avery Johnson appearances led to him winning the NBA Coach of the Year Award for his work with the Dallas Mavericks, whom he helped coach to compete in the NBA Finals.
