Detailed Biography of Apolo Anton Ohno

Not many athletes hold the distinction of being an Olympic medalist, but Apolo Anton Ohno does.  In fact, the world champion speed skater is the most decorated American Winter Olympic Games athlete of all time with two gold medals, two silver, and four bronze.

Apolo Anton Ohno became interested in short track speed skating at a very young age, after seeing the sport during the 1994 Olympics.  He quickly picked up the sport and began competing in different short track competitions throughout the United States.   His father, wanting to encourage Ohno worked to get Ohno admitted to the Lake Placid Olympic Training Center in 1996 to train full time for short track speed skating.  So, at just 13 years old Ohno became the youngest skater ever admitted to the center.  Shortly after, Ohno relocated to the Colorado Springs Olympic Training Center to begin training with senior level skaters.  In the following years he would go on to win the 1999 World Junior Championships and the 2000 World cup Title.

In 2002 Ohno competed in his first Olympic Games at Salt Lake City; here he would go on to with the gold medal in the 1500 m race and the silver in the 1000 m race.  Four years later he would compete again in Torino where he would take home two bronze medals and a gold.  Over the next few years Ohno would continue to perform well, medaling in several World Championship races.  He returned to the Olympic stage in 2010 where he received two bronze medals for the 1000 m race and the 5000 m relay.  Since his amazing performances in the past few Olympic Games, Ohno has been credited with popularizing the sport of speed skating and increasing its appeal to athletes across the United States.
